CYLINDROPSYLLIDAE Sars, 1909

Martinez Arbizu & Moura (1994) considered the Cylindropsillidae as polyphyletic and desolved it incorporating the Cylindropsyllinae in the family Canthocamptidae as well as raising to family level the subfamily Leptopontiinae.

More recently Recently Huys & Conroy-Dalton (2006) described 3 new species of the genus Evansula, including them in the re-established family Cylindropsillidae: Evansula cumbaensis Huys & Conroy-Dalton, 2006; Evansula polaris Huys & Conroy-Dalton, 2006; Evansula spinosa Huys & Conroy-Dalton, 2006.

"Pending a full-blown phylogenetic analysis of the canthocamptoid complex and the arrival of molecular sequence data, the Cylindropsyllidae could be considered as a valid family comprising the following genera: Cylindropsyllus Brady, 1880; Evansula T. Scott, 1906b; Stenocaris Sars, 1909; Cylinula Coull, 1971; Boreopontia Willems, 1981; Stenocaropsis Apostolov, 1982; Willemsia Huys & Conroy-Dalton, 1993; Navalonia Huys & Conroy-Dalton, 1993; and Selenopsyllus Moura & Pottek, 1998. Of these, the genus Cylindropsyllus is possibly paraphyletic and Stenocaris undoubtedly polyphyletic. (R. Huys & S. Conroy- Dalton, unpubl. data)".

"The family Cylindropsyllidae Sars, 1909, currently comprising 39 species in 13 genera, is a representative of mesopsammic harpacticoids (Richter, 2019). Members of this family have an interstitial lifestyle and exhibit the above morphological trends except for miniaturization, and a cylindrical or vermiform habitus without a distinct constriction between the prosome and urosome, and slender swimming legs with reduced segmentation and setal armature (Huys & Conroy-Dalton, 2006a; Richter, 2019)" (from Kim et al., 2023)
