SUPERFAMILY LAOPHONTOIDEA T. Scott, 1905

LAOPHONTIDAE T. Scott, 1905

The large family Laophontidae T. Scott, 1905 presently includes 74 genera (Bodin, 1997; Lee & Huys, 1999; Gheerardyn, Fiers, Vincx & De Troch, 2006; Gheerardin, Fiers, Vincx & De Troc. 2006; Huys, 2009; Ok et al., 2024), with more than 320 species inhabiting the intertidal zone or shallow subtidal waters, fresh waters and deep-sea hydrothermal vents; some species are associated with invertebrate hosts (holothurians, decapods)

"This speciose family comprises a large number of body forms, including fusiform prehensile [e.g. Esola Edwards, 1891; now Troglophonte according to Huys & Lee (2000)], cylindrical (e.g. Wellsiphontina Fiers, 1991), vermiform (e.g. Afrolaophonte Chappuis, 1960) and compressed (e.g. Robustunguis Fiers, 1992). This variety in body shapes reflects differences in ecology and (micro) habitat preference within the Laophontidae (e.g. epibenthic, interstitial) (Hicks & Coull, 1983)" (from: Gheerardyn, Fiers, Vincx & De Troch, 2006).

Huys & Lee (2000) subdivided the family in two subfamilies, viz. Esolinae and Laophontinae, containing 95% of the species.

Recently, some genera and species of the Laophontidae family have been phylogenetically revised or reclassified and new genera and new species continue to be discovered.
