    ARIETELLIDAE Sars G.O., 1902

"The calanoid family Arietellidae is widely distributed, occurring from littoral caves to the shallow water pelagic realm and deep-sea hyperbenthic layers (Ohtsuka et al. 1993, 1994). Phylogenetic analysis of the family pointed to the existence of two clades, viz. Crassarietellus-Paramisophria-Metacalanus-Pilarella (Metacalanus-clade) and Campaneria-Scutogerulus-Paraugaptilus-Paraugaptiloides-Arietellus-Sarsarietellus (Arietellus-clade) (Ohtsuka et al. 1994)" (from:Komeda et al., 2021)

    Superfamily RYOCALANOIDEA Andronov, 1974

Andronov (1974) established the superfamily Ryocalanoidea for the monotypic family Ryocalanidae based on Ryocalanus infelix Tanaka, 1956 introduced by Tanaka (1956) after a single male specimen. Family Ryocalanidae are distributed in both, northern and southern hemispheres (Tanaka 1956; Andronov 1992; Markhaseva & Ferrari 1996; Shimode et al. 2000; Kosobokova et al. 2011; Renz et al. 2012) and species have been described from the Southern Ocean and South Atlantic, the central tropical Atlantic, the Arctic, the eastern tropical Pacific, the Izu region and Sagami Bay, Japan

    RYOCALANIDAE Andronov, 1974

    RYOCALANUS Tanaka, 1956

"Species of Ryocalanus are separated into two groups. Group I contains medium to large sized copepods with a single rostrum, a geniculated moderately modified right antennule in the male, and the distal segments of the male uniramous leg 5 armed with terminal spines. Group II of Ryocalanidae share the small size (<1.6 mm), a bifid rostrum, the male highly complex geniculated right antennule, with strongly modified distal segments, and an indistinctly biramous male leg 5 with distal exopod segments lacking terminal spines" (from: Renz et al., 2012 )

    LUCICUTIIDAE Sars G.O., 1902

"Family Lucicutiidae Sars, 1902 consisting of one genus Lucicutia Giesbrecht, 1898 was initially considered a subfamily Centropagidae Giesbrecht, 1893, but was later established into a family by Sars (1902). The genus Lucicutia was first established as Leuckartia by Claus (1863), but was replaced by Lucicutia by Giesbrecht (1898, in Giesbrecht and Schmeil, 1898). Wilson (1924) replaced Leuckartia with the generic name Rudolfia Wilson, 1924. Isochaeta Giesbrecht, 1889 became a synonym for Lucicutia by Grice (1963). Later, Hulsemann (1989) proposed removing Isochaeta and preserving Lucicutia" (Lee et al., 2024) LUCICUTIA Giesbrecht, 1898 (syn.Isochaeta Giesbrecht, 1889; Leuckartia Claus, 1863; Rudolfia Wilson C.B., 1924)
