    ONCAEIDAE Giesbrecht, 1893

The family Oncaeidae at present include a total of 115 species worldwide (Razouls et al., 2020) distributed. In the late 19th century, Giesbrecht established the family and described many of its species during a study of planktonic copepods in the Gulf of Naples (Di Capua et al., 2017). Since then, a great variety of oncaeids have been discovered and described. At present, Boxshall and Halsey's classification system is still used internationally, which divides the family Oncaeidae into 7 genera among which Oncaea has the largest number of species.

ONCAEA Philippi, 1843 (syn. Antaria Dana, 1846; Myspictosum Kazachenko & Avdeev, 1977

The genus Oncaea contains 72 species (including one species affinis), mainly distributed in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Indian Ocean and Red Sea. Triconia followed by 27 species, which are widely distributed in the Mediterranean Sea, Black Sea, Indian Ocean, Red Sea, and the Pacific Ocean.

    TRICONIA Böttger-Schnack, 1999

"The genus Triconia was established by Böttger-Schnack (1999) transferring 14 species of the paraphyletic genus Oncaea Philippi, 1843 (Böttger-Schnack & Huys 1998) to a new genus on account of the conical process on the distal margin of the third segment of the endopod of swimming leg 4. Within the genus three subgroups had been distinguished, characterized by the presence of a dorso-posterior projection on the P2-bearing somite (the conifera-subgroup), and the presence (the similis-subgroup) or absence (the dentipes-subgroup) of integumental pockets on the anterior surface of the labrum" (Böttger-Schnack 1999)(Cho et al., 2019)

PHILICHTHYIDAE Vogt, 1877 (syn. Sarcotacidae Yamaguti, 1963)

"the cyclopoid family Philichthyidae Vogt, 1877 comprises highly modified and internal parasitic species, which are generally recorded in subcutaneous spaces associated with the sensory canals of the lateral line and skull bones of marine actinopterygians (Boxshall & Halsey 2004; Madinabeitia et al. 2013). This family comprises approximately 87 species belonging to nine genera: Colobomatoides Essafi & Raibaut, 1980; Colobomatus Hesse, 1873; Ichthyotaces Shiino, 1932; Leposphilus Hesse, 1866; Lernaeascus Claus, 1886; Philichthys Steenstrup, 1862; Procolobomatus Castro-Romero, 1994; Sarcotaces Olsson, 1872; and Sphaerifer Richiardi, 1874. Colobomatus is the most speciose genus with 70 valid species, followed by Sarcotaces, Procolobomatus and Sphaerifer with 7, 3 and 2 species, respectively (Walter & Boxshall 2014)"

    SARCOTACES Olsson, 1872

"Parasitic copepods (Copepoda: Philichthyidae) of the genus Sarcotaces Olsson, 1872 are highly metamorphosed and sexually dimorphic organisms infecting marine fishes. They can be found in galls inside the skeletal muscles of fishes. The gall, hosting a highly metamorphosed drop-shaped female is also filled with a black fluid known to stain the fish tissues during filleting. Despite their spectacular appearance they are rather rarely found" (Piasecki et al. 2020, 2022), There are eight nominal species representing the genus (Piaseki & Boxshall, 2024)
