The Groundwater Fauna of Italy: a Synthesis

Pesce G.L.1
Stygologia, 1 (2) 1985: 129-159

After a brief historical review of the stygobiological research in Italy, stygobionts or eustygophiles from the groundwaters of this country are listed and discussed.
Through systematic and biogeographic analysis and relationships within the most significant taxonomic groups, a subdivision of the Italian territory into five stygofaunal provinces, viz. Alpine, Apennine, Sardinian, Apulian and Sicilian, is proposed.
