Tuscany (Central Italy)
The little inside pool "Stillicidio" The cave "Punta degli Stretti" in the Central Appenines (Tuscany) is a karstic cave of Pliocene to Pleistocene age, situated along the Tyrrhenian Sea coast. Its oligohaline waters are home to the endemic cyclopid Diacyclops crassicaudis cosana, and to other interesting crustaceans, such as Notodromas persica (Ostracods), Salentinella angelieri (Amphipods) and Tethysbaena argentarii (Thermosbaenacens). Stygophilic species, such as the cyclopids Tropocyclops prasinus and Paracyclops fimbriatus, the harpacticoid Nitocra lacustris and the hydroid Chlorohydra viridissima, live in the same cave as well. pesce@univaq.it |
