Calanoid copepods are widely distributed in fresh and marine waters, being less common in subterranean habitats. In Italy, calanoid copepods can be found in different fresh water bodies (lakes, ponds, lagoons, temporray water bodies), in brackish and marine environments, as well as in ground waters. Most species are distributed in the Alpine province, in central Apennines, Sicily and Sardinia. The following families are represented in Italy: Calanidae, Megacalanidae, Eucalanidae, Paracalanidae, Calocalanidae, Clausocalanidae, Spinocalanidae, Mecynoceridae, Centropagidae, Pseudodiaptomidae, Diaptomidae, Acartiidae, Temoridae, Aetidaidae, Euchaetidae, Phaennidae, Scolecithricidae, Diaixidae, Tharybidae, Metrididae, Lucicutidae, Heterorhabdidae, Augaptilidae, Discoidae, Arietellidae, Candaciidae, Pontellidae, Parapontellidae, Bathypontiidae.
